The Spiti Valley is a cold desert mountain valley located high in the Himalaya mountains in the north-eastern part of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The name “Spiti”means “The Middle Land”, i.e. the land between Tibet and India. Spiti valley is a research and cultural centre for Buddhists. Highlights include Key Monastery and Tabo Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in the world and a favourite of the Dalai Lama. It was the location of the scenery and cinematography in the Indian films Paap, Highway and Milarepa.

Day 01: Shimla - Kalpa (225 km) 
Arrive in Shimla and head towards Kalpa. Reach Narkanda first and have lunch there, Reach Kalpa in the evening. Overnight Stay in Kalpa.

 

Day 02: Kalpa – Tabo (150 km) 
After breakfast in Homestay visit Suicide Point, Old Temple, and Monastery in Kalpa and head towards Tabo. Have Lunch in Nako. Reach Tabo in the evening. Overnight stay in Tabo. 


 Day 03: Tabo – Dhanker – Kibber (68 km) 
Have an early breakfast and head to Kaza this day before that you can visit Nako Monastery. The Spiti region will start from Samdho and you will see another world in this Valley. Enroute visit the Gue Mummy of Sangha Tenzin which is around 550 years old, Tabo Monastery which is close to 1000 years old now. The murals, thankas, and paintings are believed to have been made in a single night by the Gods themselves.

 

Day 04: Kibber – Langza – Komic – Hikkim – Key Gompa – Kibber (80 km)
Take the morning easy and today we head to Langza- the main area for Fossils, Hikkim- the highest post office in the world and Komic- one of the highest villages in the world at 4587 meters. A visit to the Tangyud monastery in Komic is also worthwhile. You can see some snow-laden peaks during this drive. To make this memorable, you can also hike from Langza to Komic- 3-4 hours. Visit the postmaster of the highest post office in the world at Hikkim and mail some postcards from here after that visit the oldest monastery in the region Key Gompa and while going back to homestay visit Asia Highest Altitude Bridge at Chicham. Drive back to Kibber for a night stay.

 

Day 05: Kibber – Chicham – Nako  (130 km) 
After breakfast in homestay head towards Nako before that visit Chicham Bridge which is said to be Asia’s Highest Altitude Bridge – Chicham Bridge. Nako, is a small village in Kinnaur District and has a lake also which will be frozen in the winters, so you will get a chance to walk on a frozen Nako Lake. Overnight stay in Nako.

 

Day 06: Nako – Kalpa (100 kms) 
After breakfast in Homestay head towards Kalpa(Sangla and Chitkul Will be closed in Winters) reach in the evening in Kalpa. Overnight Stay in Kalpa.

 

Day 07: Kalpa – Shimla (225 km)

After breakfast in Homestay visit, Buddha Statue in Reckong Peo which is the headquarters of Kinnaur District and one can Kinnar Kailash Peak on a sunny day from Homestay then head towards Shimla for onward journey.
